In carrying out its activities, COMEGI considers ethical issues to be a fundamental part of any scientific research process or activity, and is therefore committed to respecting and valuing the ethical standards inherent therein.
Academic integrity (AI): the Centre adopts a policy of combating any type of academic and scientific fraud, namely the falsification of data or results, plagiarism and self-plagiarism, sanctioning the lack of scientific integrity and implementing and valuing good scientific practices among its researchers. In order to implement this policy, in line with the institutional strategy adopted by Lusíada University, the Centre seeks to ensure the transparency and veracity of the knowledge produced through the following measures: (i) affirming AI as a fundamental value; (ii) creating mechanisms to raise awareness of AI; (iii) carrying out initiatives to promote AI; (iv) creating structures and implementing processes to support AI; (v) reinforcing good academic practices; (vi) reducing risk and eliminating opportunities for dishonesty; (vii) responding appropriately to fraud.
Ethics in relation to participants: the Centre's other primary consideration relates to protecting the dignity, safety and well-being of participants in research processes. In this regard, there are some non-negotiable limits for people taking part in research activities, including: respect for their self-determination; getting their free and fully informed consent beforehand; making sure they're healthy and physically and/or psychologically well; keeping the info they give us confidential; keeping the data we collect for research safe; etc.
All research processes involving third parties are rigorously monitored from start to finish by the Ethics Committee of Lusíada University. In order to better and more effectively fulfil its commitment to the fundamental ethical principles of scientific research, Lusíada University has established the position of Research Integrity Officer, who provides support in this area to all R&D centres at Lusíada University, including COMEGI.
In summary: the Centre is committed to complying with all ethical and legal requirements for scientific research activities, based on the fundamental ethical principles enshrined in The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.
The Scientific Councils of Lusíada University (Lisbon and North), at their meetings on 5 and 7 November 2024, respectively, approved this code for internal application at the University.
CoARA is an international coalition of over 700 members and signatories, including academic institutions, researchers, funders, and other stakeholders committed to reforming the methods and processes by which research, researchers, and research organisations are evaluated. The aim is to recognise all outputs, activities, and practices that maximise the quality and impact of research.
Since October 2023, the Ethics and Research Integrity Policy (ERIP) in Responsible Research Assessment for Data and Artificial Intelligence has been recruiting European and non-European member institutions to join CoARA. Its mission is to develop policies, guidelines and tools to promote research assessment that define the ethical and integrity characteristics of a responsible culture for data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) assessment in research, fostering accountability, transparency and social benefit.
The integration of Lusíada University into CoARA-ERIP reinforces this institution's commitment to the principles of ethics, scientific integrity and responsibility in research evaluation, in line with the ongoing transformations in international science and innovation systems. In this sense, Lusíada University actively positions itself in the construction of normative and methodological benchmarks that seek to ensure transparency, fairness, scientific rigour, and respect for the fundamental values of academic research.
